Harri Boy Rogers and Friends LIVE at Get Off The Grid.

What I did on my holidays in the the USA this summer.  

Scene Red, the band I sing with and write lyrics for, were invited to play at the Get Off The Grid Solar Energy Festival in Hemptown, North Georgia.  We could not raise the funds to get the whole band over so I spoke to the organiser, Bill Fleming, and he said “Don’t worry Harry, you come over with some songs and I will get you some musicians to play with.”. I arrived in Atlanta with some lyrics on my phone and met up with Craig Rafuse.  We spent four or five hours working out some chords for the songs and then we duly set off for the festival at the end of the week. I had a slot booked for the Saturday evening at 7.30pm and by midday Craig and I had hooked up with Steve Baird, a great drummer and film maker from Sandy Springs in Atlanta. Over a beer at lunchtime I was talking with David Herndon from Athens, lead guitarist with the Caroline Aiken Band, and when I said I was trying to put a scratch band together for that evening he said “I’ll play with you Harri.”, so we had lead guitarist on board. Steve Baird played drums with a great band from Atlanta, Hair of The Dog, and he persuaded their lead guitarist, John Fergusen, to join us, by six o’clock things were looking good but we still needed to find a bass guitarist. Devin Harris said “I’ll play bass with you guys if I can get a bass guitar and an amp from somewhere.”.  A band finished playing on the mainstage at 7.00pm, Devin borrowed a bass and an amp from them and turned up with these on a golf cart at 7.15pm with the other guys, none of whom knew each other, let alone me, neither did they know any of the songs.  This is a recording of what happened when we started playing on the dance tent stage at 7.30pm. I will say this y’all, they sure know how to jam in Georgia.

My Zeitgeist Tie Dye – a hippy lament.

 

On the 26th August 2017 I wrote this lyric sat at the kitchen table in Bill and Jacqueline Fleming’s house in Candler Park, Atlanta.

My Zeitgeist Tie Dye

One of those days when everything is right,

When you turn up looking clean outa sight,

People are smiling and you soon see why,

Everybody’s wearing their old tie dye.

Going back in their mind to better times,

When bent politicians paid for their crimes.

The tee shirts, the waistcoats, bell bottomed loons,

The beads and the joss, those Grateful Dead tunes,

Two days later I went into Steve Baird’s basement studio with Steve Baird – Drums, Craig Rafuse – Rhythm Guitar, and Susannah Masari – Backing Vocals where we laid down some backing tracks for this song.  I returned to England with the recorded stems, when I got back I set up a session in Andrew Howell’s studio, Andy’s Gaff, in Frome on Saturday 23rd November with Steve Young on guitar, Robert Goldsmith on Saxes, and Andrew Howell engineering. On the afternoon of Tuesday 5th December in Harriboy’s Hut, Aberbanc, West Wales I sat and did the above Mix.

After playing together at the Get Off The Grid Fest Solar Expo & Sustainability Fair at the Union County Arena in Hemptown, North Georgia on 19th August 2017  Steve Baird, Craig Rafuse and I went back to Steve’s basement studio and laid down some parts for a rock and roll song called Cricket In A Bamboo Bottle. Afterwards I took the stems back home with me and last weekend three members of The Unbroken Ponies,  Steve Young, Andrew Howell, and Robert Goldsmith added more parts in Andrew Howell’s studio , Andy’s Gaff, in Frome, Somerset, England. Today I got a copy of the mix from Andrew and here it is. Cheers everyone involved for making me happy.

I wrote the words to this song in the USA this summer after I attended a festival there.  I got together with members of the Unbroken Ponies, Andrew Howell, Steve Young and Robert Goldsmith, in Andy’s Gaff studio in Frome on Saturday and we wrote and recorded this Pop song.

Zombie Walk in Sitges 7th October 2017

Every year in Catalonia a film festival dedicated to horror, fantasy and sci-fi takes place in Sitges. Here is some footage of the world famous Zombie Walk. I would have shot more but my phone was out of battery power. A whole lot of fun as is clearly shown. Great stuff for monster lovers everywhere. Biography

A veteran of the ’70s acoustic music scene, NMJ weaves sounds and atmospheres with 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars and the kind of ecologically aware political commentary championed by his peers. Since 1976 he has been entrancing audiences on the live and festival circuits as well as on radio and TV. Nigel is the real deal, a battle-hardened survivor for his art, enthused, principled and still breaking the envelope. Well known on the UK festival scene, he has often toured UK and European major venues supporting the likes of Barclay James Harvest, Renaissance, Camel and Bob Geldof whilst collaborating with Steve Hillage, Banco de Gaia, Roy Harper, and Guy Evans of Van Der Graaf Generator, on various projects.

Nigel has recorded eleven albums. His first two albums, the majestic Ship to Shore and the world-weary Sentinel, have been re-released and are rightly regarded as classics of the genre. His recent release Raft echoes his early work featuring 12-string dexterity to the fore embellishing some great tunes and poignant lyrics of hope, love, wonder and exasperation at humanity. Guest players include Guy Evans, drummer-percussionist with Van Der Graaf Generator, and Rog Patterson on fretless bass. Nigel loves the natural world and once worked in conservation with the great apes at Gerald Durrell’s Wildlife Trust. Living near the Cornish coast natural influences are woven into his music creating an artistic reflection of the raft on which we all individually sail. As Nigel notes: “Like this planet, rafts are fragile.”

Possibly the most underated band in West Wales Scene Red have been playing most of their gigs in LONDON for the past few years.  Based at LTS Recording Studios in Llanon this band play their own brand of indy rock/funk and are ready to release their second album in time for xmas 2017.  The band comprises the following members, Harry Rogers – Vocals, Rabbie McAdam Duff – Lead Guitar, Andy Duff – Bass Guitar, James Fereday – Drums, Joy Fereday – Saxophone.

Strange Times At Number 3 – A Psychedelic Memory

Just playing with my recording software and this emerged after a couple of hours.  This poem refers to an acid trip in 1971 when I lived at number 3 King William Walk in Greenwich.

After Johnny Butt slipped me a tab

I lay there tripping in the dark

I saw trees dancing in the park

Ray stick man waving at donkeys

Bo and bob walk in through the wall

The naval college collapse into dust

Don’t Come To Me – A message to Bob Dylan

An online collaboration with an old friend Andrew Howell who used to be in The Red Lights when I was their manager back in the mid 1970’s.  We recently got in touch again and this is the first result.  I wrote this lyric as a response to my feelings of disappointment that Bob Dylan would play gigs in Israel whilst the Palestinians are STILL denied their own freedom to determine their own future in their own country.
